Utilities

Getting it right the first time, at national scale.

Utilities serve almost everybody, which means the customer data is large, the obligations are public and a service failure is visible within the hour. We build the measurement, reporting and platform capability that has to satisfy the regulator and the customer at the same time.

The challenges

What makes this harder here

Utilities sit between two audiences with different requirements and the same underlying data. What makes the work difficult is that both have to be satisfied from one set of facts, at national scale, without a quiet period to do it in.

Two audiences, one set of facts

The regulator and the business need different views of the same data, and a reporting layer built for one rarely serves the other without rework.

Customer data at national scale

Volumes where a design that behaved well in test does not survive contact with production, and where the cost of reprocessing is measured in days.

Consent and collection under scrutiny

Measurement that has to be defensible as well as accurate, because somebody may eventually ask on what basis a given data point was collected.

A modern channel mix on decades-old billing

Apps and self-service built over systems designed long before either existed, where every new channel adds another integration to maintain.

Service events that become public quickly

Outages and billing errors where the reporting has to be right the first time, because the second version will be read as a correction.

Sound familiar?
Data exists everywhere, but clarity is harder to find.
