In 2023 Croatia adopted the euro, replacing the Hrvatska Kuna — a pivotal moment in the country’s financial history. For the banking sector, the switch meant overhauling systems, modifying reports and reconfiguring data to accommodate the new currency. Koios supported seven major Croatian banks through that transformation, together covering 80% of the Croatian banking market, across a programme that ran for 12 months.
The transition came with a stringent one-year deadline for all entities, the banking sector included, to adapt their systems. Overhauling systems, modifying reports and reconfiguring data for a new currency is substantial work in its own right; compressing it into a single year made it a formidable undertaking.
Time was the main challenge throughout. The available window raised serious concerns about meeting the deadline and cast doubt on the feasibility of the transition itself.
Koios drew on its extensive fintech experience and engaged 90% of its workforce on the project, matching the scale of the commitment to the scale of the deadline.
The work was comprehensive. It started with understanding the scale of the task, moved through meticulous analysis and specification of the changes each bank needed, and culminated in the execution phase.
At Privredna Banka Zagreb, a Koios specialist took on the role of test manager, ensuring the changes were implemented correctly. Data conversion came as one of the final steps in the process, and the team executed it effectively and efficiently on the strength of a deep understanding of data structures and their interdependencies.
The programme was delivered using Oracle and SQL Server databases with PL/SQL, the DataStage ETL tool, the SSIS, SSRS and SSAS tools, Visual Studio with its SSIS and SSRS extensions, and Excel.
